I heart me some online shopping. I've still been browsing like crazy, despite the dearth of posts. I've even seen some things I thought, "Oh, hey, that should go on my blog."

But more and more websites are making it a pain in my ass to put images of their merchandise up here.

So... what do I do? I don't think it's likely I'm going to put the effort into doing a screen cap every single time. (So screw you, Modcloth.) What are some places where you like to shop?

P.S. Surgery went fine. Except I kind of suspect my physician is a little too gung-ho and I probably spent longer than I needed to recovering. But I feel better!

Guys, this is what I love about Etsy: a lot of the stuff on there is boring, repetitive crap. Half the time I go into the "geekery" or "weddings" sections (kind of my staples these days), I find myself going, "You want to charge how much for a what-now?" and shaking my head in disbelief.

But sometimes... sometimes the stuff is just AWESOME. The jewelry I've seen on Etsy is some of the most creative, original, beautiful work in the world. I'm glad to be a part of that. I know there are other sites that do the same thing--ArtFire and others--and I think you should support the artisans whose work you like in whatever way you see fit. It's not that I think Etsy is THE ONLY SITE for this kind of thing. It happens to be the portal I go through, but these artisans are working in the real world and reaching out to their customer base through a variety of ways.

Enjoy the diversity. Where else, in today's corporate, consumeristic, cheap-plastic-crap driven economy can you find a spider brooch that sits on your shoulder and is creepy and beautiful all at the same time?

Well, maybe to me. I finally said, "What the hell," and launched a blog I've been thinking about starting for a while. As you all know, I'm planning a wedding. Before I started wedding planning, when I was blithely ignorant, I said things like "It shouldn't be a problem to keep it under five grand!" and then I started researching prices on things. And suddenly I realized I had a problem. And the Internet, while helpful, was also full of really terrible and useless advice. I only have so many talented friends I can coerce into becoming free labor by threatening not to love them anymore.

So. The blog isn't pretty, it isn't polished, it's text-heavy and full of profanity, but now the first post is up and I have about a week's worth of content ready to go. It's going to be mainly posts about things I think are good deals, so it's going to be very time-sensitive, but my goal is to show people planning weddings that they can have pretty weddings for way cheaper than Martha Stewart would lead them to believe is possible. And that they can do it their way, whatever their way is.

It's called The Cheap as Fuck Bride. There will be rants. Oh, there will be rants.

Hey, guys. It turns out I need a comments policy! Which is a little weird, since I've been running on about two hours of free time a day lately and not spending any of it blogging, but there you go, fame has a far reach. Here it is: You can disagree with me as firmly as you want to, but you don't get to be mean/stupid about it. And you definitely don't get to talk crap to the other commenters. We're in my sandbox, we play nice.

Example of acceptable comment: "Your opinions are appalling. That looks NOTHING like something Spock would ever wear."

Example of unacceptable comment: "U r such a bitch, hope u die."

Is the difference clear? On the one hand, you have relatively respectful disagreement; on the other, profanity and ad hominem attacks. (Also, seriously, you have a full keyboard in front of you, you can type out the five extra letters.) I expect a little more out of my critics, logic-wise. If it's a fallacy that's so common it has a name, it's beneath you.

Unless it's a really, really funny personal attack. If you accuse me of being a Thetan succubus intent on world domination, you know, I'll probably leave that one up.

O-Chem is over in mid-June. You may see some new posts then. Of course, I've got the MCATs in August to study for (yes, yes, I know, I picked a terrible time, I didn't have a lot of options), so who knows. And I'm a little depressed by some of the new fashion trends. We seem to be headed for another mid-90s flashback, with the awful floral prints and the mauve, and the only--the only--good part of the mid-90s fashion world was Scully. So get a trench coat and hunker down for the next couple of seasons.

I guess today's three pieces are almost like an outfit, sans shoes. Huh. Well, I love the long black cardigan, above; I'm a big fan of cardigans, period, and anything that makes dresses slightly warmer is OK by me.

I like the bold lines on this piece. (Also the blue. I'm thinking I should do a post that's SGA-themed, with Atlantis-blue stuff... and maybe some leather bustiers, because, you know, Teyla. Now that that's out of the way... band-aid studs. You know what NB will forever mean to me? "Nota bene," note well: my first (and favorite) Behavioral Neuroscience professor told us that he'd use that abbreviation a lot in his class, and he did. I adopted it, of course, along with half of his mannerisms, because when you're 19 and idealistic and you have an idol, that's what you do. He's got a circle of adoring undergrads tagging along after him most of the time, and he deserves it; he's a very good professor and he maintains professional distance without sacrificing personal warmth.

I do wish he hadn't popularized tie-dye to that extent, though. The Neuro classes got a little... blinding.

Rant: Sexism and Research

So I've been enjoying Dr. Grumpy lately, what with having some free time and all, and as I was reading through the archives today, came across this post. It's from a while ago, but it just chapped my ass so personally I had to respond.

Here's my response:

I'm having a flashback to freshman Psych and the Golden Fleece Award. You should Google that shit if you're not familiar with it.

Anyway, this is my field (right down to the lesbians), although not my research. A couple of points:

1. This kind of research is dirt-cheap. I did a similar study for the cost of the paper it took to get informed consent. And the labor, of course, is students--free. And it's not like we give the participants anything.
2. There's the "Knew it All Along" bias, which is bad in every field but exceptionally bad in social psychology. No matter what your findings are, people say, "I already knew that." With perfect confidence. Even if you present Group A with one set of findings and Group B with diametrically opposed findings. (It's been tested!) So, your perception of how much you knew this to begin with... probably not the best source.
3. The plural of "anecdote" is not "data"--you've heard that one before, right? And anecdotal experience is definitely not the best thing to cite when moving forward with a study about homophobia or sexism. Half my audience (of middle-aged white dudes with doctorates) doesn't believe sexism still exists anyway, because they've never seen someone get patted on the ass and called "sweetie" at work. There's a different standard for demonstrating something in a scientific context than in a social context.
4. The take-home message of this study is that men don't believe that sex between two women is "real" sex. It's not threatening because women don't have sexual agency--women can't possible enjoy sex, or form meaningful romantic and sexual attachments with each other. If they do have sex, it's probably because they wish a man was there. It's really all for the men, in the end. Women aren't people. They're blow-up dolls.
And that's sexist, homophobic bullcrap worth studying.

I wanted to tack on a whole lot of stuff about homphobia and sexism being deeply interconnected, the hostile/benevolent sexism dichotomy, etc., but I figured I tend to write absurdly long things anyway and I should quit early. Especially since, as I mentioned, I enjoy this blog. Unironically, non-sarcastically.

I get frustrated pretty readily with this sentiment, though. This "Why do we bother studying social psychology?" sentiment. Does sexism matter? Does racism? Guess who the people studying effective interventions are in both cases.

And if you want a medical link, here's one: queer people who experience homophobic work environments have higher salivary cortisol levels than controls. SHOCKER. Another one of those pieces of apparently obvious research, on a subject that was getting ignored by pretty much everybody except queer researchers. And you know what higher cortisol levels means? Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activation. Which means hippocampal cell death: say hello to depression and memory problems! Also higher blood sugar, with increased risk of diabetes, infection, and cancer! Yeah, good thing mental state doesn't fucking affect physical health, right? Thank God we don't study how prejudice negatively affects the mental and physical health of the discriminated-against population, because that would be such a waste of fucking time.

And if we want to change the discriminatory environment, we need to study it.

Talk about obvious.

United Nude: New Shapes, Old Shapes

Well, I did warn you I was going to be busy for a while. I'm afraid that's not going to change much--I'm still in organic chemistry with lab, although the good news is that I'm about to start my last quarter of it, and I'm coming up on the end of my volunteering commitment, although I remain (for the time being, grants being what they are) employed.

So, on that note, look at some pretty shoes from United Nude! First up top is Abstract.

Shoe Grab-Bag: Sherlockiana

Guys. GUYS.

I'm excited about this. I want you to understand how excited I am. I want you to feel the love! Do you know what the love is for? No? Let me enlighten you.

A few months ago I heard chatter on the interwebs that there was a new BBC series, a modern adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes stories, called "Sherlock." I was dubious. "Modern adaptations" gave us things like, oh, I don't know, Young Clone Holmes and Robot Watson. And that's just what made it onto TV. I love me some Sherlock. Have ever since I was a wee lass in fourth grade, trying to figure out what all the big words meant and what the hell was going on. I've re-read the whole kit and caboodle more times than I can count since then, and my relationship to and love of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson has evolved during that time. I've developed an appreciation for fan-led reinterpretation and re-imagining, and it's not exaggerating to say that many fan works surpass the original media sources in terms of both scale and skill. (If you're familiar with SGA and up for some hot obnoxious-Canadian-scientist-on-American-Air-Force-pilot action, you should look up "Written by the Victors." The Victorsverse is one of the most amazing collaborative efforts of fandom I've ever encountered.)

So I was pretty sure this was going to suck. a) It's the BBC, and their production values are pretty notoriously awful, I mean, come ON, they knew they weren't going to be able to compete with American studios on that basis so they developed other strengths but it's like they don't even TRY not to suck, and b) I was expecting robot Watson and teenaged clone Holmes level of "reinterpretation." (It was awful. I'm just saying it straight-out. Teenaged clones aren't always bad news--"Clone High" is a delightful little show, available on Hulu from time to time--but ugh.)

But fandom liked it. Fandom liked it a lot. And although fandom has notoriously liked some pretty godawful shows (see: The Sentinel, possibly worst-written show not featuring rich Californians ever but OH. SO. HOMOEROTIC), I looked it up, found it was available on Netflix, and thought, what the hell. I'll give it a shot.

It arrived this week and last night we finally got the chance to sit down and watch it. We're both writing papers and doing homework like crazy, and I'm still working full-time and volunteering on weekends, so it gets busy.

And that brings me back to my opener: guys, you have GOT to watch this. If there is any love for Sherlock Holmes in your ruby-red hearts (and there often is, among the geeks and nerds and weirdos of the world, since he's pretty much Spock/Data/7 of 9, not so much Odo, but you get the point), you need to watch this show. The production values are good. Not even "not distractingly terrible," but actually good. The characters are believably updated and well-acted. So far I don't even want to stab the writers in the face for sexism/misogyny! (I'm not saying there isn't any, but so far they've managed to not make it as bad as, say, SGA, where the women are mysterious and sexy [Teyla], compassionate and nuturing [Weir, Heightmayer], or evil seductresses [Chaya, every off-world woman ever].)

Although I do have to wonder whether they even bothered calling a shrink, or whether somebody just browsed a website about personality disorders and figured, hey, that's enough research. I WOULD HAVE TOLD YOU "functional sociopath" is neither a real disorder nor an accurate term. But that's nit-picking.

Hey, boots! Navy blue, love the wavy leather.

Nina: Amp It Up

I WANT IT. Unfortunately, I haven't been clubbing in... a depressingly long time. So I have no excuse. And they wouldn't go with my wedding plans one tiny bit. But somebody needs to buy them and dance the night away. Especially because more shoe designers need to realize that they can incorporate LEDs in awesome, tasteful ways that look more like Tron than they do like those sneakers with the flashing lights with each step.

Space Invaders ties

Guys, we got engaged. (This means my current no-free-time will devolve to no-free-time-until-2012.) My man proposed on December 30th, with a ring that was exactly what I wanted--sterling silver, no rock, an organic free-form design--that he had picked out himself, with his uncanny ability to know what I want before I know.

Marriage is a feminist issue. I'm marrying my man because he understands me and respects my autonomy; he understands that I'm bisexual, he understands that I'm a radical feminist, and he knows that I will always be disappointed that he loves Star Wars more than Star Trek. And most importantly, he's a grown-up: he knows that my choices are mine, his choices are his, we are responsible for our own lives and our own conduct, and we can choose how we orchestrate our lives.

So I'm not looking forward to explaining, over and over again, that I didn't want a rock on my finger or an expensive engagement ring for the simple and sole reason that it reifies the patriarchy. It signifies ownership. It says "keep her in the style to which she has become accustomed."

It's the 21st century, and we get to choose what marriage means to us and how we want to view symbols, but I also don't want to hear that I must not really love my fiance if I don't want a diamond. Or how I must not love my father if I don't want him to walk me down the aisle or do that creepy-ass father-daughter dance. Or how I must not love my fiance since I'm keeping my own name, even though it's the name I was born with and the name I've made all my accomplishments with and the name that's a little complicated so I'm used to saying it all in one breath, my name and how it's spelled. Or how I'm a terrible person if I end up not having children because I value my career and I don't want to have a kid while I'm trying to get into medical school. The notion that it would be anyone's business but mine, anyone's right to judge, the most intimate decisions of my life--love, sex, marriage, child-bearing, child-rearing--flabbergasts me. It is appalling that complete strangers will offer their condemnation. I've already gotten that crap, both for being queer and for being consciously ambivalent as to whether I want to have children; I'm not taking any more of it. Ever. Is life too short to take shit or too short to mind it, the age-old question goes, and I'm a pretty firm believer in not taking any unnecessary shit.

As Alanis says, "I believe that one and one makes two." Marriage matters not because it's the union of two people into one person, but because it's two people choosing to make their lives together. I don't think I need to take his name or wear a ring to show my man I love him. I do that every day, through the small and large decisions I make, as a free and independent woman. Any attempt to pretend otherwise--to pretend that marriage somehow miraculously unites two different people into a single entity with a singular purpose and a singular set of desires--is doomed. And the worst kind of marriage-related lie of all is the lie that women should submit to their husbands, rather than work through to a mutually acceptable compromise. Happiness does not consist of subsuming your identity. It consists of living up to your potential, whatever that potential is; knowing that you do a good day's work; knowing that you treat the people you love with dignity and kindness. Happiness is dependent on owning your identity, not on assuming someone else's.

I wasn't born a radical feminist or even a feminist at all. The day I started to think I didn't want a diamond engagement ring came fairly late in college, when I was sitting in a small-group discussion section with three women, who all started to compare their engagement rings and wedding bands. And then the question came: "What does your husband do?" As I watched them get defensive, create ever-more-elaborate ways to describe their husbands' jobs and elevate their future prospects, discuss loudly how they were unwilling to sacrifice one C for another C in their diamonds, I thought, clear as a bell: I cannot live like that. I cannot and will not live with the ridiculous idea that my husband's career is an indicator of my worth as a human being.

It sounds idiotic to put it into words. It is idiotic. It is an implicit assumption in our society and it needs to be recognized as a load of poppycock.

My man is my man because I love him. C.S. Lewis notes that there is a kind of man who will think of his wife, his dog, and his boots all in the same way. Love and ownership are not the same thing.

I am not looking forward to the conversations I will have with strangers or acquaintances or, at times, family members about my wedding. I am not looking forward to explaining, over and over again, that marrying a man does not invalidate my bisexuality any more than committing to a woman would have. I am not looking forward to getting mercilessly berated by advertising that blares a single, anti-feminist ideal wedding.

What I am looking forward to is marrying, and being married to, the person who has made me laugh, given me a safe place for emotional expression, explored uncharted sexual territory with me, and been a constant, hilarious, thoughtful, brilliant, and generally frakkin' awesome companion while I've been growing into my own skin.

At the end of the day, people who aren't me don't have a lot of room to tell me how to be me. That's what it comes down to. The right of autonomy is the ultimate right, second only to the moral imperative to avoid doing intentional harm. Without it, all the Orwellian horror of a techno-dictatorship comes to bear, even if it's only in the context of one human relationship or one human life. Every human life matters; every self-aware creature, no matter how limited that self-awareness, deserves some respect and compassion. It's a horrifying world in which we still deny people that basic right to self-determination.

So you don't have to agree with me about how to be a feminist. I don't get to tell you how to be a feminist, or what being a feminist means. I get to tell you what it means to me and how I am trying to live in accordance with my principles. But I damn sure hope you agree with me that, as human beings, we all have the fundamental right to autonomy, whether or not our societies, families, or significant others understand and accept that.

Guys, I conked my knees the other day and they still hurt like crazy, especially the one I've pre-injured. So, to take my mind off the mundane reality of a purple and red knee that's swelled up like a grapefruit: pretties! All these necklaces are leather. Geometric, up top.

This one is called the Nefertiti. If you were an ardent childhood Egyptologist, as I was, you may find the comparison worth quibbling with, but still--cute. (My mom actually took me to San Jose to see the Rosicrucian Museum's exhibit of Egyptian artifacts when I was probably eleven or twelve, and I flabbergasted the girl who worked in the gift shop by reading a cartouche pendant that was being sold as a love charm. It said "Cleopatra." Real original.)

I can't help myself. When I see Grecian draping, or really any kind of draping, or, for that matter, bold colorblock, I always think the same thing: KHAAAAAAAAAAN! Because, let's face it, that was kind of an iconic moment. People who have never watched Star Trek, or at least not TOS, know that moment. It's like the "Luke, I am your father" of Star Trek. So: draped dress? Star Trek!

This one almost feels more Next Gen or Dune to me, but it's all drape-y. In it goes!

And this one... guys, the stitching is kind of primitive, or at least looks that way from here. It reminds me of the time I sewed my best friend a Halloween costume at the last minute in about half an hour. (I made liberal use of safety pins and duct tape, yes.) Which only makes it all the more classic. Have you seen how godawful some of those costumes were? I would provide visual aids, but I think I'd go blind. Anyway, not only is this a one-shoulder bare-bones dress, but apparently it has a "subtle silver shimmer." Subtle like a brick, I bet... but that makes it no less awesome.

How can you tell it's finals time? I stop posting completely. Whee! However, I did warn you. And it probably won't get meaningfully better any time soon. Next quarter will be even worse--this quarter I just had lecture twice a week after working full-time; next quarter and the quarter after that, God willing and the creek don't rise, I will be going to lecture AND spending two additional nights a week after working full-time at three-and-a-half-hour-long sessions of LAB. I hate lab. Something about walking into lab makes me feel like the most butter-fingered colossal dunce the world has ever seen. I'm reduced to drooling and making chimpanzee noises while my lab partner does all the thinking. It's a miracle I don't hurt myself in lab more often. Just thinking about it, I managed to get a ring stuck on my finger. Totally stuck. Coincidence? I think not.

I was watching an episode of Next Generation last night and it made me so nostalgic. Deep Space Nine! Julian Bashir! I had this one awful moment where I turned to my boyfriend and I said, "That isn't a young Gaius Baltar, is it?" and we had to look it up on the Internet to be sure it was not the case. It made me wistful for dresses like the one above, with bold geometric shapes. Also mustard yellow, but I refuse to commit that fashion crime even for my love of Data.

In case you're new to this party, let me explain something about my personal life: I have none. I'm currently working 70-hour weeks, pretty routinely, between my day job, my evening organic chemistry class, and my weekend volunteering at the ER. The onset of this schedule two months ago coincides with the sudden decrease in post volume. I was posting about once a day, pretty consistently, for a long time, but that's gone down markedly. I don't regret any of my time commitments, because I need them all if I want to a) get into med school and b) not be broke, but... this suffers. So, if I don't post for a long time, don't be surprised. If I never post again, assume that o-chem got the better of me and I changed my name to Moonbeam and moved to a hippie commune where we could talk about communicating with divine energy via crystals.

But it's not all bad: I just got a research assistant job, so I left the day job that was contributing greatly to my lack of happiness. I start the new position on Monday, theoretically, so wish me luck.

I'm a comic fan. Not in the I-own-every-X-Men-universe sense--I have a feeling I could get into that, but honestly, I get turned off by the often poor writing quality, the slapdash "gritty" feeling of the illustration, and the ludicrous fantasies of femininity. So I end up reading a lot of webcomics. I like bright, clear illustration, like the hard-edged embroidery on these headbands; Bam, up top.

I am also a sucker for thought-bubbles.

But this superbly over-the-top Ghost of Bedazzler piece is my Gagalicious favorite.

GUYS! GUYS! GUYS!

I'm interrupting this regularly-scheduled workday to inform you that a) I bought some stuff from the Casstasstrophe and it was pretty cool--I thought it would be like my black laser-cut acrylic necklace from Untamed Menagerie, but both pieces are matte and I think easier to take care of--but also b) SHE MADE A GLOBAL DYNAMICS NECKLACE. At my behest, pretty much; I brought up the awesome GD logo when I bought the first two pieces (a HHGTTG thumb and a darling little piece with C3PO and R2D2) and she said she'd think about it.

Anyway, I bought the first one but there's another.
