LuLu's: Speed Demon

Today I wanted things for girls who go fast. Like that charming little pink vest over here. Moto has been a trend for a while now, but I always say, get the pieces that match your personal sense of style while they're available. (For instance, when I was in high school, there was a period of time when flowy, hippie-eqsue, vaguely SCA stuff was all the rage. I bought a lot of clothing at Rave, including the most ridiculous/awesome red crushed velvet corset-look top with 17th-century French style sleeves, and continued to wear it happily while the rest of society devolved into ever more neon and tacky crap.)

This jacket is great. Very Amelia Earhart. Or Starbuck. Just sayin'. I once made myself a t-shirt with iron-on letters that says, "Starbuck loves me," in the shape of a heart, and I keep waiting for someone to ask, "Starbuck who?" so that I can explain that although I made it with Kara Thrace from Battlestar Galactica in mind, it also works as an X-Files reference, because Scully's father called her Starbuck.

No one's ever asked.

I'm kind of afraid that they think it says "Starbucks loves me," especially since this is Seattle. But I don't love Starbucks and I daresay they wouldn't like me much, either.
And this dress... well, it mostly has a zipper and is the same color of red as my mother's midlife crisis.

Note: Google Analytics

So I started using Google's Analytics tool, and guys, it's kind of creepy. I can see what people search for that brings me up--mostly "science fiction fashion," unsurprisingly--and even what kind of browser visitors are most likely to use (Firefox, same as me). I just wanted you to know. I don't want to feel like your boundary-overstepping ex-boyfriend.

On the upside, way more people came here than I thought! I have a readership in the double digits, guys! That made my day.

Edibly Etsy: Improbable Cog

Today I'm liking some pieces of jewelry with real attitude. First up, a spoked, spiky earring.

Dubbed the "Martian Flytrap" by its maker. I think it's very apropos.

But I think these are my favorites--wing-shaped earrings. Batlike and delicately alien.

Old Gringo: Boots for Space Cowboys

Today I miss Firefly. A lot. So I'm going to bust out some boots that make me long for a universe that never existed. First, boots with gorgeous flower detailing.

Pure classic Old West.

But I think these are my favorite--the soft fade, the vague exoticism, the almost floral detailing. If they ever stop being four hundred bucks, sign me up.

Modcloth: Psycho Killer Style

Been thinking about adding a murder room to your basement apartment? These are the things I would want if I were going to go into a life of crime. Charming boots, although easily blood-stained, would accessorize neatly.

This cleaver necklace would be a delightful inside joke.

And this jacket is sufficiently sinister, I think.

Luna Bazaar: Parasol Madness

In these dog days of summer, it can be nice to add a little something to your outfit without making yourself into a sweltering heat-bundle. On that note, I'd like to introduce you to a couple of really attractive paper parasols; you might not get many seasons out of them, but generally, they're pretty cheap and fairly steampunky. First up: this gorgeous red and gold number. The most expensive of this batch, at 26 bucks.

Don't feel like dropping thirty bucks? Tired of round things? This soft yellow parasol is square. And it's less than ten bucks.

And this lovely cutout green parasol is only eight bucks.

Edibly Etsy: Charlotte Burkhart

Today I'm liking a few pieces of jewelry with a pretty diverse set of themes, including this syringe brooch. It's part of a series, so if you like the general shape but aren't keen on the content, there are some cool other options.

Quite a bit of the work is Harry Potter-themed, including this lightning bolt ring.

And, because I'm pretty sure queers like me will be a lot more accepted in the future (forget "tolerated"), this equality ring.

Forever 21: Draped Again

Today I'm feeling the Star Trek: TOS again. (This may have something to do with how many episodes of it you can watch on cable when you're unemployed, but I digress.) Tunic top or overgrown henley?

Tunic top or product of a t-shirt/bathrobe mating?

I like this one best, though--it's verging on toga territory, but it does it well.

LuLu's: Little Gray Women

Go all Reticulan on me, starting from the top...

Rounding it out with a jacket...

And finishing it up with some boots.

Friday, July 23, 2010

Ahem.

So, normally, I try to set up these posts the night before at the latest, so they go up in good time. Tonight, I have had a very, very long day--a long couple of days, actually--and I am drunk, and it is obvious that I am not going to be done with being drunk and dancing around and watching Futurama and Ace of Cakes in quick succession any time soon.

In lieu of (hey, I can still spell lieu! awesome!) a real fashion-y post, then, take this link to an Etsy cross stitch pattern. In honor of my sister, who will cross-stitch pretty much anything at the drop of a hat. Although I feel fairly certain I asked her to cross-stitch something scathing for my office while I was a TA, and that never happened. Hmmm.

At any rate: I'm done moving! Hurrah! All my stuff is finally in Seattle! The only remaining obligation is to my thesis advisor, with whom I am (God willing and the creek don't rise) authoring a paper on sexy gay boys. ...I have the best research ever.

Etsy Grab-Bag: Rockets for Kids

I am all about the indoctrination of youth... as long as it's into the exotic mysteries of space-time, and the sheer, unabridged awesomeness that is pretty much everything having to do with rockets. From rivets to solid-fuel technology, what's not to love? First up, kids' hoodie.

Get 'em while they're Popplers! Onesie.

And the thing that makes this rocket shirt awesome: the detachable cape. Guys. COME ON. Who didn't want a cape when they were a kid? Who doesn't secretly still want a cape?

...I want a cape. Now I've made myself sad.

Outnet: Return of the Stirrup Pants!

AHHHHHHHHH

Sometime I'll tell you about my Southern grandmother and the outfits she sent my sister and me every holiday, like clockwork.

Many of them featured stirrup pants, although none quite as hot a pink as this.

Modcloth: Founder's Day

Okay, so, I hate spoilers with the white-hot intensity of a thousand flaming suns. (Don't ask me what other kinds there are, this is hyperbole.) Which is why I won't tell you anything about the Eureka Season 4 premiere if you haven't seen it yet. (If you haven't seen it yet, WHY HAVEN'T YOU SEEN IT YET? YOU WOULD LOVE IT. COME ON. GO WATCH IT. I AM NOT LIVING WITH ANOTHER BETTER OFF TED MOMENT HERE, PEOPLE.) But I can tell you, without spoiling anything, that they begin the episode talking about Founder's Day--a fond look back at 1947, when Eureka was founded. So, in honor of that, today I'm busting out a selection of looks you could get away with at the dance. First up, a romper.

A flirty little ruffle-fest.

And a puff-sleeved delight.

And, okay, did you know Eureka is on Netflix? And also you can buy episodes of it on Amazon? It is so easy. You can buy individual episodes, or the whole DVD for earlier seasons. If you started watching the first two episodes and you're kind of like, "ehhhh, the tone is weird," keep watching. It takes them a while to realize that they're good at comedy and they should roll with that. The characters grow on you, like real family members, and eventually it gets to where you watch the first two episodes of the new season and it BREAKS YOUR HEART because WILL THINGS EVER BE RIGHTED? That's general enough, right? Good Lord, I once spoiled book six of Harry Potter for a friend of mine. I will never forgive myself. So I won't say another word. But WATCH EUREKA. It's fantastic, and I'm not even generally a fan of all-caps but I will break them out for this show in a heartbeat. I even buy it new, guys. I buy it new specifically so that some tiny portion of what I pay will go directly to Jack and Allison and Zoe and Jo.

Go watch it. Then go watch Better Off Ted and mourn the untimely demise of the funniest show to grace the airwaves in possibly the entire history of television. I hate you, network executives. I hate you so much.

Edibly Etsy: Squidpop

Today's cuteness comes to you courtesy of a little place called SquidPop. Or maybe it's a persona. Or "Squidpop," or "squidpop." I don't know. The point is, darling bodysuits like this one.

Or Trekkian goodness like this.

And for this one, you should really see it from other angles, too.

Velvet Angels Shoes: Straight-Up Bad-Ass

You'll just have to imagine that I'm doing that cartoon-wolf thing where my tongue rolls out and steam pours out my ears. These are just awesome. First up, pumps with some nice detailing and (invisible from this angle) bowed heels. Reminiscent of McQueen, but without the extravagance.

These gladiator-esque sandals are gorgeous. I like them for a Star Trek: TOS feel.

But these boots take the cake for me. Catwoman, much?

Link: Why your feet hurt.

Today's thing I didn't know, but that people who wear heels probably should.

Design Detours: Mirror Universe

You, there! Do you have more money than Croesus? Then take some of these...

Toss them on one of these...

And, to complete the picture, set up one of these.

Voila. Coolest room ever. I rest my case.

Forever 21: Lace Cowboys

Today I'm liking some things that feel very Firefly-esque, with the cute Old West vibe. This blue top has a really nice lace detail neckline.

This is trending a little more aqua, but it's also got great lace detailing, this time around the shoulders.

And more lace. I love how froufrou this is, frothy and pink.

Etsy Grab-Bag: Tires and Treads

Today I'm liking some things that remind me of the road. First up, a pretty cool bag made out of recycled bicycle tube.

A set of stacking rings with a tread-like pattern.

And more bicycle tubing, this time coming back as wings. When I think about a post-apocalyptic world (that's normal, right?), the things we've made that will persist for some time trouble me. I liked that series that Discovery did--what was it, The World Without People? Life After People? something like that--with the animations of a post-people breakdown of our stuff.

It's good to think that someday, all of our trash will be overgrown.

LuLu's: Space Safari

Today I'm liking some very desert-y pieces. I could see these on Battlestar pretty easily, or Dune, maybe. Zippered dress.

A sassy little romper that feels like someone took some shears to a military outfit, and then brought in the elastic.

And a shirt-"dress" that I would strongly encourage you to wear with some sort of additional leg covering. Please.
