I'm really liking the organic feel of pieces from this Etsy seller. These raw emerald studs feel very alive.
This ring is my favorite piece, though--white coral. It looks so ethereal.
And this necklace has a post-apocalyptic feel that I enjoy. This would go well with a lot of my own wardrobe, actually.

Shoe Grab-Bag: Angel Sandals
Monday, June 28, 2010
For a good read...
This is my life right now. Everybody talks about weight, but this is the first discussion I've seen that really hit home for me in a super-personal way.
LuLu's: Pretty in Black and White and Gray
I like the collar on this dress--very princess feel.
The ruching here is really nice. (Plus, that dress looks soft. I do love a nice jersey dress...)
And I love the almost melting look of the details on this shirt. Mmm. If I could justify it, I'd get it, even though no white piece of clothing ever survives its first day with me. (I... love lots of foods that stain.)

Etsy Grab-Bag: Tiny Favorites
Today I'm enjoying some old favorites, in new miniature sizes. This miniature plate has been altered with an image of R2D2 and turned into a pin.
This necklace is just enough Harry Potter to get you through the day.
And these iPhone earrings are pretty dang cute. I don't always approve of Jobs' tactics, but you can't deny they resulted in some nice merchandise.

LuLu's: Battle the Gods
If it seems like I come back to Battlestar Galactica a lot, it's because I do. These sandals reminded me a lot of some good old-fashioned vintage Star Trek (all the Greek episodes), and also, I could imagine Six in them. ...Happily.
And speaking of Grecian styles, it's nice to know we're still into them. Draped shoulder dress.
But I think this is the most Six-ish piece. Love that cage back.

LuLu's: Nautical/Stripes
Today I'm liking some pieces with sailor-ish flare. First up, the light gray dress with diagonal striping and those shoulder pieces that always make me think, future.
This strapless dress is less nautical, more stripey.
And this dress has it all. Looks about half like it's been sewn out of an old-time prison uniform.

Pixie Market: Neuromancer Knockodds
So I meant to write "Neuromancer Knockoffs," but I like my mistype better. I was looking at this shirt today and thinking that it looked to me like something I'd see if I were in the Neuromancer world.
And here's the thing. I read Neuromancer when I was a teenager. Maybe it was my callow youth, but I didn't love it. I remember, in fact, being repulsed. So what's up with that? Should I re-read it?
(I like this jacket. It feels... kind of Gattaca, actually. Yeah?)
I mean, it was good, but it wasn't like when I read Slant, by Greg Bear. When I read Slant, I remember thinking, I can't stop; I can't put this book down; I will always be profoundly saddened by the fact that I didn't--couldn't--write this book. It isn't even my usual style. I like space-operas. I like epic battles of good and evil with cowboys and aliens. Firefly was my dream show, Star Trek: TOS will always have my heart, and Eureka makes me laugh every single time.
But Slant still makes me think. It still gets to me. It deals with psychological topics; after a master's in experimental psychology (yeah, I'm gonna be saying that every five seconds until the novelty wears off, bear with me), I'm still blown away by how ahead of our time it is, let alone 1998. And, holy crap, I just realize that Slant is a sequel and I haven't read the first book. What the hell? No one told me!
(I like the dark urban feel of this cardigan, too.)
Anyway, my point is, should I re-read Neuromancer? Is there something there that past me just didn't get? Or is this one of those cases where the first--the pioneer--wasn't really that good?

JUMP: Blue Non-Suede Shoes
It's no secret that I love JUMP shoes (like the pair above). Sure, the materials tend to be cheap and you always have to order up at least a half size (a whole size if you want to wear thick socks). But the heels have more stability, comfort, and just plain funkalicious style than any other shoe kind I've ever met.
I typically have two pairs of go-to shoes, one in brown and one in black, at any given time. I like to have a warm(er) weather pair and a cold(er) weather pair in both colors, but I'm not fussy; it's always between 55 and 65 degrees and partly cloudy with a chance of showers here, so closed-toe and water-resistant is the name of the game. Ever since I discovered JUMP shoes, those have been the Sens pump (no longer available, for which I curse God on a daily basis) and the Stark boot (best. boot. ever).
But seeing these pairs in turquoise really makes me want to branch out a little. I've never worn JUMP sandals, so I lack direct experience to speak to the issue, but dang, aren't these cute?
And these.

Pixie Market: Coats and an Oh-No
I'm not going to bury the lead. It is that you can buy a coat clearly modeled after a garbage bag for two hundred bucks. Come ON, guys. Come ON.
Seriously.
It's particularly sad when you consider that it's pretty easy to do a coat that doesn't look awful.
Like this one. Totally cute.
Or this one. Very Firefly.

Edibly Etsy: Sempercura
Guys, I'm not gonna lie. I want this USB drive. I want it SO BAD. If I weren't moving in a very short time, and if I just hadn't blown about this much money on an external hard drive to back up my rickety old iMac prior to this move, I might very well purchase it. I kind of hope nobody buys it so that, if I find a job in Seattle in a reasonable time frame, I can. (Also: if you're looking for a research assistant with a master's of science and five years of human subjects experience, may I suggest... me?)
This is also a USB drive. I KNOW.
This is my second-favorite. Totally badass.

Shoe Grab-Bag: Espadrilles and Such
Man, around here you still wouldn't know it was summer, but I can dream. There are plenty of sandals that get you out of the black shiny boot space pirate queen rut. Vince Camuto espadrille.
Naughty Monkey sandal--I love the strappy detailing.
And a shiny espadrille-type slide.

Design Detours: A+R Cuteness
Ugh. Post-graduation, I've developed a nasty sore throat that got me out of bed at five-thirty in the morning, only to discover that even piping-hot green tea, my usual cure-all, does nothing. Good thing the Internet has adorable planters to distract me. Domsai terrarium.
IV planter.
And, when you're done watering the plants, these adorable skull ceramic pieces would be great for watering yourself.
