Nerd Parenting

I'm a fan of reproduction. We all are, or our genes wouldn't have made it this far. And, though I am not imminently planning on it, I do enjoy good nerdy maternity wear/paternity wear/parenting gear. (I hate to treat parenting as a Sacred Domain of Motherhood. Sexist crap. You can have one mommy, two mommies, one daddy, two daddies, a daddy and a mommy, two daddies and a mommy, two mommies and a daddy, or two daddies and two mommies, plus a few other configurations--and that's without specifying the sexual orientation, marital status, biological contribution, or even chromosomal gender of either party. It can get real complicated, and by God, that's the way it should be. Parenting is not a heteronormative monopoly game. Parental fitness, however we assess it, exists on a case-by-case basis, even a child-by-child basis.)

Anyway, I like the "loading" maternity shirt. And the Star Trek onesies.

And the nom bib!

Edibly Etsy: Catherinette Rings

I may have talked about Catherinette Rings before, but I wanted to revisit the subject.

The jewelry has been getting progressively more elaborate over the time I've been watching the shop (dreaming of a day when a ring in my tiny finger size would show up that I both wanted and could justify getting at that point in time), and the labradorite ring there is just one example.

Also rings with taxidermy reptile eyes.

I think my favorite of the new ring styles is the amber with inset mechanical parts, though.

Modcloth Week: Grecian

As I've noted before, "Space aliens who are surprisingly Greek" is quite the popular trope in Star Trek, and I've seen draped tunics in a number of other sci-fi shows as well. (Not to mention book covers.) In our Eurocentric world, I often get the impression that we remember Greece as this mythical land of fantastic ethical and mathematical leaps forward. That may tend to underestimate the progress of Arabic mathematicians during that time--and, after all, the Greeks did not invent zero--but whatevs. I like tunics as much as the next Kirk.

This dress can be worn belted or unbelted, and unbelted, it's a pretty nifty futuristic dress with an interesting drape.

This is probably the most Grecian, and in my opinion the most elegant, of these tops.

Modcloth Week: Patterns

I'm liking the emphasis on patterns in today's pieces--the violent contrast in the dress above, for example.

The imperfect blocky shapes of this coat.

And the optical-illusion look of this floaty blouse.

Modcloth Week: More Military

I like the military elements to these pieces. None of them are particularly subtle--certainly not the paratrooper necklace above.

We've seen a lot of military-inspired jackets and vests lately; not so much with the skirts.

And, yes, I am including this because visions of dashing sea-captains are filling my head.

Modcloth Week: Buttons

Today: buttony goodness. Lovely leggings, and darling socks.

Modcloth Week: Military Vests

Military/bandleader vests: all the rage. I like the deep-V vest above.

Cropped vests will always look a little odd on me, but there are many women on whom these look dynamite, and I really like this color/braid/button combination.

And with this one, I mostly just really love that teal.

Modcloth Week: Dresses in Gold

Continuing the Modcloth theme, today's selection consists of dresses with gold accents or entireties. Metallics: always spacey. Above, sequin tank-top style.

Sequined EVERYTHING style.

Lame and fringe--I like it. Possibly the spaciest of all three.

Modcloth Week: Necklaces in Yellow Metal

Okay, so this week I'm feeling the Modcloth love. I went looking for something to post, and I found enough fuel for quite a few little fires. This is especially handy for me because I'm about to start data collection again, so my spare time is largely going to be eaten up by undergrads who want credit. (I'm running one of the last experiments of the quarter.) First up, jewelry. Specifically, shiny pretty gold-tone necklaces, like the Pacman piece up there. Love it. Nerd it.

Steampunk? Bicycle.

Nonfunctioning yet detachable USB defy-port.

Edibly Etsy: Marcus Berkner

Today I'm liking the pearl pretty-pretties of Marcus Berkner. Shiny silver branch-y organic ring, check.

And giant what-the-hell piece of awesomeness based-on-fiction pendant, woo yeah.

Costume National

So it's time to stare lovingly at shoes I can never afford again, this time from Costume National. Like those black pumps.

Ridiculously awesome purple boots.

And black boots I kinda wanna have sex with.

Forever 21: Revisiting Sci-Fi Classics

Man, I don't like to mock Forever 21 too much, but at the moment, their "New Arrivals" page is just so ripe for it. You may recall the Past and Future Classics post about Greek tunics. See above.

I have not gotten to the post about "Space Pocahontas" yet, but trust me, I will. See above. Or that episode where Kirk gets amnesia.

To understand why this is relevant, I call your attention to the jabot, and redirect your attention to any episode in which Picard gets into the Holodeck.

There was also fake fur, but I just can't bring myself to post it.

Etsy Grab-Bag: Nautilus

Today I'm thinking about that noble last remainder of its kind, the nautilus. There are traditional takes on nautilus jewelry, like that fossil necklace there. And there's a place in my heart for fossils; there's something poetically eerie about them. They are the last imprints of things long dead.

However, I also like more warm, living renditions. The cherry wood earrings at right are vibrant. And the nautilus is far from extinct.

And this ring is an ultramodern take on the old shelled dear. Organic, but not soft.

Comic Interlude

Okay, so I generally try to stay positive and upbeat, but... I really don't think this model could look any more upset about the Santa-sexualization and tights-with-undies combo if she tried. I would have expected this from America Apparel. (Dov is, from what I read on teh intarwebs, a terrible, terrible person.)

Also, it is eighty dollars.

One might ask, "Why?"--but I worry that would dilute the dawning realization that, yes, pervert-Santa sweater costs eighty dollars, which, far be it from me to tell anyone how they should spend their money, but: eighty small hamburgers. Eight pairs of nice warm woolen socks. A small, but tasteful, tattoo. Two or three skirts from the mall. A giant bag of clothing from Goodwill or Value Village. The thrill of the eBay chase. Several bottles of fairly nice wine. Four copies of the Star Trek movie that is coming out on DVD today, squeeeeeee.

Or: Santa's mittens on your tits. Tit-mittens. It just... it boggles the mind, it fairly does.

Edibly Etsy: Your Organ Grinder

Your Organ Grinder does some really awesome things with felt. I'll admit to being an anatomy freak--I love a good representation of an internal organ, be it human or animal--but I think jewelry like these brain earrings can appeal to darn near anyone. Right?

Or how about a kidney brooch? It's funny, but I was actually just telling a friend of mine this morning that kidneys may well be my favorite organ, despite all the trouble mine caused me this summer. (Seriously. I'm twenty-five, and I have recurring kidney stones. What kind of world is this?) The functional structure of kidneys has a truly beautiful simplicity.

And, uh, this is a two-headed chicken. Interior decor? Come on, you know it would make an awesome centerpiece for Thanksgiving.

Design Detours: Singular Dinosaur

I know that there are more art/decor dinosaurs out there, but this one is just... it's really something.

I had a dream the other day that T-Rexs were taking over the world, and then they became zombies, and I remember thinking in my dream, Dang. It's all up.

Shoe Grab-Bag: Silver and Gray

Today I'm liking some metallic boots. I know, it's kind of a theme, but come on--metallic boots and sci-fi are practically synonymous. These are all on the expensive side.

First up are some boots from Guess, the Gwdarela booties. Some nice studding there.

Next, the Stern bootie from N.Y.L.A. Almost like a fan-blade.

And, finally, the Carvela Gambia. Is it just me, or does the name make you think of Gambit, too? I love the studded loops.

Forever 21: Jackets and Coats

I'm enjoying Forever 21's jackets today. First up, a rhinestone-studded 80's inspired jacket. I have to admit, I kind of love this. If I saw it in a sci-fi movie, I would not find it out of place.

I have had outerwear on my mind lately, what with all of this "winter" around, and I like this coat--bold and brassy. I've never had a bright red coat, but I think I'd enjoy it.

And this "jacket," which really looks more like a short, structured dress to me, is spot-on with the moto trend.

Edibly Etsy: Nicholas and Felice

Today I'm enjoying some pieces from Nicholas and Felice on Etsy. Although they do a wide range of jewelry, they have a section just for nerdy and geeky jewelry, which I find charming. For example, these html tag earrings. They remind me of back in 1997 or so, when I finally grudgingly accepted that the Internet was probably important and learned to make my own website. (It was atrocious, but I improved with time.)

And for the chemistry nerd in your life: a little piece of the periodic table in the silver necklace. It is silver, so it's "post-modern, self-referential" jewelry. Gotta love the meta.

And, for a physics nerd: diode symbol earrings. There's a bounty of pieces for typographic nerds, as well--all kinds of editing symbols.
